Please click on logo to return to catalog TSUGA.............HEMLOCK Canadensis..........Canadian Hemlock The Canadian Hemlock, Tsuga canadensis, is one species of ten in the genus Tsuga, which means `tree' and `mother' in Japanese. It is a tree about 30 meters tall with a pyramidal shape and it is native to the eastern part of North America, from Nova Scotia south through the mountains to Alabama and west to Minnesota at an elevation of between 610 and 1700 meters. It has been in cultivation since 1736 and has given us many superb garden forms. Dwarf Globose Zone 4 'BEEHIVE' (globose group) This dwarf forms a dense beehive-shaped bush with fine textured foliage. Prefers some shade. H:/W: unknown. Dwarf Spreading Zone 4 'BENNETT' Dainty, slow growing form with ascending branches that arch out with drooping tips. Grows broader than high. Very nice. Prefers partial shade. Developed around 1920 by M. Bennett, nurseryman at Atlantic Highlands, NJ. H:/W:2.5-3' Miniature Irregular Zone 4 'CLOUD PRUNE' This is one of the best of the dwarf hemlocks. The unique, irregularly layered, branching structure gives the impression of puffy clouds. Recent introduction. Very nice! Dwarf Prostrate Zone 4 'COLE'S PROSTRATE' (spreading group) Very prostrate, slow growing, much lower than pendula. Requires some shade. This cultivar was collected by H. R. Cole in 1929 at the foot of Mount Madison in New Hampshire and has since become very popular. It can be staked upright to attain desired height then let to cascade in its natural form. Miniature Irregular Zone 4 'CURLY' An unusual dwarf, irregular plant whose needles are curved around the shoots creating the most unique effect. Partial shade. H:3' W:1' Dwarf Upright Zone 4 'EVERITT GOLDEN' This forms a dwarf bright gold upright plant attaining best color in full sun. It was found in 1918 on an exposed slope near Eaton, New Hampshire by Samuel Everitt of Huntington, L.I., New York. H:4-5' W:3' in 20 years. To see a larger photo (71k) click on the one above. Intermediate Conical Zone 4 'GENEVA' (conical group) A beautiful specimen tree or screen will be made with this dwarf upright with dark green foliage. Partial shade is best. The origin is not known but the original tree is located in Geneva, NY, at the former home of the founder of Maxwell Nurseries, which is now the Trinity Church Home. A seventy year old specimen is about 16 feet tall. H:3' W:3' Dwarf Globose Zone 4 'GENTCH WHITE' (white tip group) This one forms a nicely shaped globose to mounding bush with silver-white tips. Some annual shearing is advised for compactness and a more intense color but the color is brightest in the fall. Does best in partial shade. Discovered by Otto Gentsch of West Merrick, L. I., NY. H:2' W:2' Large Upright Zone 4 'GOLDEN SPLENDOR' This selection is an introduction by John Mitsch, of Aurora, Oregon. A nice golden, broad upright hemlock that is rather fast growing. It will tolerate full sun or shade, but will have best color in full sun. Excellent as a specimen. Miniature Conical Zone 4 'JACQUELINE VERKADE' (conical group) A dwarf globe with excellent color and tiny foliage. Growth is about 2-21/2" annually and will grow in full sun. It originated as a seedling at Verkade's Nursery located in Wayne, NJ around 1961. Dwarf Spreading Zone 4 JEDDELOH' (spreading group) A very attractive dwarf mound, often having a birds nest-like depression in the center, bright green. Sun or light shade. This variety originated as a seedling from Jeddeloh Nursery, Oldenburg, West Germany around 1965 and has become very popular for the small garden. H:1' W:2' Miniature Globose Zone 4 'MINUTA' (twiggy group) Dense, irregular, dark green needles grow approximately 1 cm. per year, making this pygmy dwarf a rare collectors addition to your garden. Ultimate height is 18". It was found by Daniel St. George of Charlotte, VT, around 1927 at a place called Cambell's Hump, near Waterbury, VT. Intermediate Upright Zone 4 'NEW GOLD' This new selection has a bright gold color on the new needles which looks absolutely brilliant against the older dark green needles. Later in the season the gold turns to a deep green. The habit is vigorous and I don't know the ultimate H:/ W: but like most hemlocks it will tolerate shearing. H:8' W:4' Intermediate Weeping Zone 4 'PENDULA' (pendula group) Weeping Canadian Hemlock. Very attractive form growing into a low mound of over-lapping, drooping, pendulous branches. Broader than high and dome-shaped in full age. Grows well in sun or shade. This cultivar has been in cultivation since 1884 and is very popular in modern landscapes. Miniature Spreading Zone 4 'STOCKMAN'S DWARF' A nice slow growing, broad compact pyramid with pendulous tips in a medium green. This is a selection of Stockmans Nursery of Greenlaw, NY and was introduced to the trade by Vermeulen & Son Nursery around 1961. Very attractive plant. Partial shade.
