' This miniature, globose form is very slow growing and
will grow to about 16" wide and 12" high in 8-10 years. Very finely
branched. Raised as a seedling by Little Tree Farm, Canada and introduced
to the trade by Bulk & Company Nursery, Boskoop, Holland around 1965.

YELLOW RIBBON' This selection has great golden-yellow foliage and a nice pyramidal growth habit. It will attain 8-10'high and only 2-3' wide in about 10 years making a nice vertical statement in any landscape.

GREEN GIANT' Is a tall fast growing upright evergreen with a tightly pyramidal to conical growth habit. The foliage is a very nice glossy rich green that even looks exceptional during the winter. There is one at the U.S. National Arboretum that when it was 30 years old it was 30 feet high. This selection will tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions from heavy clay to even sandy loams. There are no significant pest or disease problems making this selection a fantastic alternative to Leyland cypress. It was introduced in 1967 to the U. S. National Arboretum by D.T. Poulsen of Kvistgaard, Denmark as T. (
standishi x
plicata), and renamed by Don Shadow after much confusion in the trade with Thuja occidentalis '
Giganteoides'. Anyway, it is a wonderful choice for a screen or background plant or even as a specimen and is becoming very popular.

DOONE VALLEY' This one originated on Exmoor in Somerset, UK, as a selection by R. S. Corley and was introduced by Hillier in 1970. It is golden-bronze sport from Thuja plicata 'Stoneham Gold' with the foliage being similar to Thuja p. 'Cuprea' or 'Rogersii'. The habit is that of a slow-growing conical bush with an upright habit.

GELDERLAND' This one is a great hedging variety selected and widely used in Holland. It has darker green foliage than Thuja p. '
Atrovirens' and somewhat thicker and more bushy. It comes from Leen Konijn in Ederveen in the Netherlands and was found about 1986.

GRUNE KUGEL' Here is a new selection from Eschrich Nursery in Germany. It has a nice dwarf compact habit that looks like it will become a broad cone-shaped plant. It is a nice green with very little bronzing in the winter. After ten years it will be about 60 cm high.

GREEN SPORT' Here is another selection from Don Smith of Watnong Nursery in NJ. It was named in 1968. A nice green upright grower that will turn bronze in the winter.

SUNSHINE' Here is a nice cultivar with a yellow color on the foliage that doesn't burn in full sun. The tips hang down gracefully, almost pendulous providing one with a very relaxing feeling.

VIRESCENS' A narrow upright form with dark green shiny foliage all year. It is a fast growing cultivar with a wonderful texture and color in a mixed conifer planting or as a specimen. This one is an improved selection of the Western Red Cedar with a darker green color even throughout the winter. It is becoming very popular for use as a hedge or screen due to its toughness and adaptability to a wide range of conditions. Virescens makes a great replacement for the Leyland cypress. Prefers full sun or partial shade and a moist well-drained clay or loam soil.
Please prune the dwarf Blue Spruce to return to the top.
