Verticillata
| Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal Plant Award |
There is only one species in the genus of Sciadopitys and that is the
Sciadopitys verticillata or Japanese Umbrella Pine.
It is native to central Japan at 200 to 1700 meters elevation and will
eventually grow to about 40 meters high, becoming narrowly conical. It
needs lime free soil and time due to the slow rate of growth when
young. The thick, glossy green needles, about 5" long, are held in
whorls and are actually two needles that are fused together to form
one. It grows well in either full sun or partial shade. Very popular. H:4'
