METASEQUOIA DAWN REDWOOD Please click on logo to return to catalog Glyptostroboides Metasequoia is a genus made up of only one species. This beautiful deciduous conifer has only been available commercially since 1946. It was thought to be extinct and the only evidence that it was even here was in fossil form. It is native to very remote areas of China where it can reach 105 feet high. It is commonly sold as the 'Living fossil' and is now a very popular conifer in the garden. This tree is not a dwarf and grows rather fast, about 13 feet in ten years. The form is conical becoming rounded with age with a very broad trunk. The needles are a rich green when they appear in the spring turning an attractive yellow-golden color in Fall before they drop off. The beautiful reddish-brown trunk adds nicely to winter landscape. Large Pyramidal Zone 5 ‘GOLD RUSH’ This is a striking new selection of the famous ‘Dawn Redwood’. It was raised from a seedling in Japan and known as ‘Golden Ogi’ or the ‘Golden Mantle’. In 1993 a Dutch horticulturalist named Peter Zweinburg brought it to Europe and changed the name to ‘Gold Rush’. The height in 10 years will be approaching 15’. I saw this one in New Zealand when I was there in 2001 and in Japan at the originators nursery, growing in full sun and it didn’t have any burn at all. It makes a great statement when used as a specimen plant. Large Pyramidal Zone 5 ‘JACK FROST’ Here we have a great variegated form of the ‘Dawn Redwood’ that has creamy-white almost snow-colored tips of the branchlet after new growth appears in spring. The light variegation gradually fades to a nice green in the summer. The form is slightly smaller than the species but it is still quite large. An excellent plant with a great name.
