JUNIPERUS JUNIPER Please click on logo to return to catalog This genus is made up of about 50 different species growing in the Northern Hemisphere. It has provided us with many great garden cultivars. We are currently growing plants from 4 different species. Communis Common Juniper Juniperus communis or the Common Juniper is a pyramidal shrub or small tree about 4.5 to 15 meters tall but it can also be procumbent. It is native to Northern and Central Europe through to Northern and Western Asia to Korea and Japan; in North America it is only found from New England to Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Again this species has many good landscape varieties of which we feel three of the best are Juniperus communis 'Compressa', 'Gold Cone', and 'Pencil Point' Miniature Columnar Zone 5 'COMPRESSA' A dwarf form that is very narrowly upright and very slow growing, only 3-6 centimeters per year, with a very fine texture. Intermediate Columnar Zone 5 'GOLD CONE' A new release from New Zealand with an upright, compact, columnar habit and tight brilliant green-canary yellow tipped foliage. Great choice! Very Popular. To see a larger photo (30k) click on small one. Intermediate Columnar Zone 3 'PENCIL POINT' A very thin columnar plant. Much tighter than 'Skyrocket' but faster than J. communis 'Compressa'. Formosana Formosa Juniper Intermediate Weeping Zone 6 The Formosa Juniper or Juniperus formosana is often found growing in the mountains of China, Tibet and Taiwan at an altitude of 1300 to 1400 meters. It is usually a multi-stemmed tree with spreading branches and pendulous branchlets. The bark is deep brown and exfoliates in thin strips. The selection we grow makes a great addition to the landscape due to its nice weeping habit. It will grow to 8-15 meters or sometimes higher and often multi-stemmed, secondary branches are pendulous, dark brown exfoliating bark, similar to J. rigida 'Pendula' but needles are softer and habit is much more columnar. Rigida Japanese Temple Juniper The species of Juniperus rigida also known as the Temple Juniper is a shrub or small tree about 8-12 meters and has a pyramidal or conical crown. It is native to Japan, Korea and Manchuria in valleys and mountains to an altitude of about 1500 meters. It is often found planted in the garden landscapes of Japanese temples. It was introduced in 1861 by the great plantsman J. G. Veitch to England but is still rare in the nursery industry. This selection, J. rigida `Pendula' is a little more pendulous than the species with a very nice weeping habit. Large Weeping Zone 3 'PENDULA' This shrub or small tree has red-brown to yellow-brown branches with a pendulous arching habit which hangs down mane-like. It makes a nice, attractive statement, with this graceful look. Squamata Flaky Bark Juniper The species of Juniperus squamata or the Flaky Bark Juniper is a prostrate shrub or small tree about 1 to 3 meters high. In its native areas of Afghanistan, India, China, Tibet and Taiwan it can be found in mountainous regions about 1600 to 4000 meters in elevation. There are many varieties in cultivation now and we offer one of the better ones. Dwarf Spreading Zone 4 'BLUE STAR' Dwarf form that is steel-blue needled, irregular mounding and spreading growth habit, slow grower. It originated as a witches broom on Juniperus squamata 'Meyeri' in 1950 in a Dutch nursery. First introduced in 1964. Full sun is best.
