'DWARF PAGODA' Dr. Elwin Orton from Rutgers University, NJ, developed this extremely dwarf plant. It has tiny dark green leaves and an irregular branching habit. A very nice companion plant for a dwarf conifer garden or rock garden. Also a great selection for bonsai. Recently it has become very popular for use in decorative patio planters.

'GOLDEN HELLER' This is a selection of `Golden Heller' that has the small leaves and compact growth habit that has made Ilex crenata `Helleri' a popular landscape plant and also has a super yellow color when grown in full sun. Extremely popular! Quite rare in the trade.

'HELLERI' Compact low mounding shrub with dark green leaves. Todays standard for lower growing Japanese Hollies. It can be pruned into a nice low hedge.

'MIDAS TOUCH' This dwarf, compact, low mounding shrub with tiny leaves also has a creamy-yellow margin around the deep green center. It was developed by Dr. Elwin Orton of Rutgers. Similar to Ilex crenata 'Helleri' in hardiness. Uncommon in the trade and should really be used more. It makes a great accent plant.

Miniature

Zone 6
'PICCOLO' This is a nice, miniature, self-shaping little cushion with nice green color. Another release from Dr. Elwin Orton's breeding program. Extremely slow growing.

Upright/Columnar
Zone 6
'SKY PENCIL' Here is a dense narrow upright selection for that hard to fill vertical location. It was released by the U.S. National Arboretum and has nice dark green leaves and a reasonable rate of growth of about 8-9 feet in ten years. I saw this plant at the nursery of Akira Shibamichi located in Saitama, Japan. He is the originator of this great selection.

Dwarf
Mounding
Zone 6
'SOFT TOUCH' Here is a exceptional mounding bright green hemisphere. It is dense and compact with a great soft look. It is a nice slow-growing neat and tidy selection that is great for almost any location.

Glabra
Inkberry

Intermediate
Upright
Zone 5
'SHAMROCK' Here is a nice slower growing form of the Inkberry. It has darker green leaves than the species and is much more compact it is also deer resistant. It will tolerate many adverse conditions but not alkaline soils. Grows best in full sun with a moist well drained soil but it will also do very good in city conditions and partial shade. A great choice for a hedge or background planting or in mass planting.

'SERENDIPTY' Here is another excellent hybrid from Dr. Elwin Orton's Ilex breeding program at Rutgers University, NJ. In the past we incorrectly sold this particular cultivar as 'Rock Garden'. The plant has been mixed up in the trade and this is now the new name. Anyway it is a fantastic selection and we never seem to have enough of this one. It has nice dark green shiny leaves and a nice dwarf habit. One plant we have is 14 years old and only about 15" high.
