GINKGO MAIDENHAIR TREE

Biloba Maidenhair Tree
The Maidenhair or Ginkgo Tree translates from
Japanese to mean Silver Apricot. This fruit of this tree is valued in the orient
for its medicinal purposes and for food value. The unpleasant smelling
fruits are like small sweet plums, these occur only on female trees.
All varieties we sell are only male varieties. The genus, which
was widely distributed and had many species in prehistoric times (175
million years ago), now only has one species. That is Ginkgo biloba.
It is highly resistant to air pollution, disease, and insect pests and
so makes one of the best street trees for use in cities.
NEW!
‘BROOM WITH TUBES’ Here is one with green leaves that roll into a tube quite similar to Ginkgo biloba ‘Tubifolia’ but since it only grows 4” a year it will produce a very nice dwarf.
'CHI CHI' The round bumps on the trunk remind you of female breasts or 'Chi Chi' where the name comes from. They form as the tree matures usually at around 10 years of age. The bumps are really dormant buds ready in case they are needed This selection is very rare and makes a fantastic choice for the landscape but is highly prized in the bonsai community.
'JADE BUTTERFLIES' Here is a nice dwarf Ginkgo that has a deep-V cut into the center of the bi-lobed leaf. This gives one the impression of a butterfly form of leaf. The deep green leaves are found in dense clumps creating a sensational effect!

'SARATOGA' This selection is also an introduction of the Saratoga
Horticulture Foundation. It was released in 1975 and is distinguished by
being a small tree with a somewhat pendulous branching habit. It is dense
and compact with deeply lobed leaves creating a lacy look. Very nice selection.

'WITCHES' BROOM' This new selection of Ginkgo biloba
is a dense, congested plant with medium green leaves. The form is a globose
to ball-shaped plant that can be sheared. It should reach a size of about 3'
in 8-10 years. Very limited availability, so order early.
