Cephalotaxus Plum Yew Please click on logo to return to catalog Harringtonia Harrington's Plum Yew The plants we grow are selections of this evergreen species. They are reported to be quite deer resistant and look similar to a taxus with a very dark green color but the needles are 4-6 cm long. They tolerate shearing very well and are hardy to zone 6. The species can grow to about 10 feet high but it is mostly seen as a shrub in cultivation. The attractive exfoliating bark is gray and peels off in strips. It is native to Japan and China and has been known since around 1829. Due to the tremendous popularity of this plant we are now offering four selections for sale and we are evaluating a few more for the future. It also grows well in the shade. Dwarf Low Spreading Zone 6 'DUKE GARDENS' This is a selection of var. drupacea that was introduced by the National Arboretum in DC. It will tolerate heavier and wetter soil conditions than Taxus and the deer don't like it. Being somewhat similar to Taxus but having longer flat needles and slightly ascending branches it makes a great substitute. This variety is quite low and wide spreading. To see a larger photo (68k) click on small one. Dwarf Columnar Zone 6 ‘FASTIGIATA’ This variety is a selection that grows upright. Great choice for wherever a straight up accent is needed. Real nice long, dark green leaves are about 2-2 ½ “ and it is deer resistant. To see a larger photo (34k) click on small one. Dwarf Prostrate Zone 6 'PROSTRATA' Here we have a great selection that is a low wide spreading plant with excellent glossy green needles. I saw a plant that was 30 years old, 2.5 meters wide and only 70 centimeters high. Like the rest of the Plum Yew's it is also not deer food! Dwarf Spreading Zone 6 'WATNONG' This selection comes from Watnong Nursery in NJ. It grows low and wide and has a nice deep green foliage color year round. Grows to about 2.5 feet high and 5 feet wide in 15 years. Again like the rest it is deer resistant. Please prune the dwarf Blue Spruce to return to the top. ©1997-2006 All rights reserved.
